Dust Elba Campagn: Enter the Allies!!! - Dust Tactics Battlefield Blog (Intro) - Part 2

...And Knowing is Half the Battle!

This is the continuation of my thoughts prior to the beginning of the Elba Campaign being run at our local Store by Guillaume Sartem...if you didn't start with part 1, please go back and read it!

http://wargamingninjaturtles.blogspot.ca/2015/01/dust-elba-campagn-enter-allies-dust.html

I will use the G.I.Joe Slogan a lot in the next few posts as the more I play games, the more I will get a feel for my units...and Knowing is Half the Battle!

Dust Elba Campagn: Enter the Allies!!! - Dust Tactics Battlefield Blog (Intro) - Part 1

Fellow Turtles,

For me 2015 will be the year of WWX, Mage Wars, Kings of War, Rum and Bones (assuming we don't get it late!) and Dust Battlefield!!!

Don't get me wrong, I'll still play me some Warmachine/Hordes...I'm just gonna make room in a busy schedule for all of these other GREAT games!

I've played some Warfare during the reign of FFG and I really enjoyed it...however I was very hesitant to jump on the bandwagon of the Dust Tactics Babylon Kickstarter, I followed the whole transition period between FFG and Battlefront but I was very indecisive about investing more money into this game not knowing where it would end up...

DUST: Elba Campaign (BETA)

''The Navy Seals had failed thus proving that Elba was definitely more than a green dot on our maps to our enemies too.
With the ''Frontenac'' and ''Champlain'', the two new Allied aircraft carriers fresh from Montreal's drydocks on their way to the Italian Coast, it was made clear to all Allied commanders that Eisenhower had agreed with Lieutnant General Francois ''Frank'' G. and Admiral Jean-Sebastien C. 's plan of invading Corsica and Elba as the first steps to somehow cut or divert Axis reinforcements from their ongoing operations in the Middle-East and give some reprieve from the besieged Marine divisions.

While Corsica's landings went smoothly with minimal life losses, Elba was another problem altogether with the Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and even what seemed to be (but is still unconfirmed) SSU submarines waging a relentless war to the Allied Navy around the island. Still, for all their enemies' strenght, the new Allied aircraft carriers and anti-submarine tactics developped by Pelican pilots allowed the Canadians to continue with the operations and begin the landings.
Thus started one of the fastest and bloodiest campaign the world had seen: Elba's Campaign.''

Welcome to Campaign Elba, the desperate defense from German Blutkreuz divisions as well as various Wehrmacht's Zverograd veterans to protect the Axis Island's secrets and scientists from an Allied invasion as well as Smersh and Soviet Navy.

DUST: Captured 1.5 ton Cargo Trucks

--Asocom Report on Axis Captured Trucks and their Use by SIK--
-For your eyes only-

When the Axis did their 1947 assaults on the Eastern Front, the intensity and strength of the Wehrmacht caught off guard many SSU divisions who, sometimes, were forced to retreat before they could even try to apply a scorched earth tactic.

This allowed some Axis units to acquire 1.5 ton Cargo Trucks and while most of these were used to haul equipment and crates behind the lines

DUST: Captured Kv-47 ''Natasha''

In my last post, the tutorial for a Captured Kv-47 ''Otto'' I decided to eschew talking fluff as much as I could so I could focus on the tutorial.

Now that the tutorial is done, I can show in this post my Captured Kv-47 ''Natasha''.

As I said in my Otto post, Battlefront posted the rules for Captured Vehicles on Dust-Tactics.com (here, click clik! ) and in it, a list of various vehicles you could capture.

With my Otto built, I thought it would be fun to give it a sister in the form of a Captured Natasha.
Normaly you can use only one captured enemy vehicle in your lists but the Otto counting as an Axis vehicle would allow me to use two KV-47 in my lists.

DUST: Tutorial: Painting a Captured KV-47 Otto

I must say I must have been one of the happiest person on the planet when, during the kickstarter for Dust, Battlefront/Dust Studio revealed rules for using captured enemy vehicles.
To the non-gamer, all this joy just for rules for a miniature game might be really sad to witness, but as a hobbyist and one that loves converting and scratch-building, etc, this was as if paradise had opened its gates.

I started working on a captured Pounder for my Axis, then decided to make it for my SSU and still wasn't too happy with it. Thats when I saw Isaiah Burgess' work on one of the Facebook group ( Lets see if this works ) = a beautiful Otto, a Sino-Soviet Union's KV-47 captured by Axis and re-armed with weapons from a Hans.

That same night I played a game versus Axis ally Guillaume Juneau (aka Yaum) who showed me a stunning half-track he had painted (Really Nice Half-track here, click click!! ) with a sick rust effect.

Thus the following morning my Axis troops were stealing a KV-47 from the dangerously close (in their glass display) SSU troops I own.

OTTO TUTORIAL: FROM START TO FINISH

a.k.a. Lets put some paint on that!

Playtesting Dust Tactics V2

Lack of action on Wargaming Ninja Turtles was partly due to me having moved in a new place and my lack of internet.
Back to the main topic...

DUST TACTICS V2

I'm sure everyone who reads this blog has seen this Dust Tactics Babylon Kickstarter by now.

I must say couple of things:
-I've been impressed by Battlefront = ...

DUST - Painting advanced German camo

Meine Leibermuster sieht besser aus als deine

Guten Tag Soldat, today we shall dig a bit into the fine art of camouflage. As you are here, chances are that you play, or are interested into playing, Germans, be it for Dust or another game like Bolt Action. One of the factors drawing players to the Axis is the possibility to paint interesting camo patterns, well, that and big scary panzers, of course!

One of the last camo patterns produced by Germany was the Leibermuster, a seemingly complex pattern that was also able to evade infrared to some extent. As this camo was starting to get issued only in early 1945, it didn't get as much widespread as it could have. But the beautiful thing here is that my game is DUST, thus the war hasn't ended yet by 1947 so I can have some fun with this pattern and have a change from my boring (to paint, not to play) Canadians.

Put up or shut up!

So it's all well and good this little history lesson but let's crack those paint pots open and smear colors here and there! Keep in mind that I'm very content to keep a tabletop level on this project.

So the first step is to paint the base colors. For this Soldier 3 model (DUST models are awesome, if you don't play you should look into it!) I start with a base coat of Citadel Tausept Ochre, which is sadly a defunct color but any light ochre should do the trick. Then I paint the face (in a pale tone as he's German) and his bit of clothes that are visible in grey.

And then I wash, a mix of chestnut and black (3/1). Once the wash is dry you can come back and do some highlights with the same ochre used.

Step two consist merely of painting elongated spots of green. For most steps, the spots will be more on the horizontal line.

Step three is pretty much the same as step two, but this time in Orange Brown.

For step four, we simply dab a few spots of a dark red, less frequent than the two previous colors and less elongated.

And now to step five, and where it begin resembling Leibermuster. Here we stop doing spots of paint, and you need a very fluid black paint, thus having a wet palette or paint retarder is a must, as well as a sharp brush tip, be it a quality Windsor & Newton Series 7 or a very fine detail brush. Here we do fine curved lines, a bit like a tiger's stripes.

Now we can go to step six, and use the exact opposite color, good old white. However, pure white is always to be avoided on a miniature, except when representing a pure light, which is not the case here, so i tinted my white with a small amount of green, just enough to break the purity. You could use Menoth Highlight or something similar if you don't want to mix colors.

Here the goal is to put small dots of white, sometime paired, as you can see in the left hand picture.

Finally, here we are at the final step, you need to go back to your black, still ready to be used thanks to the wet palette :) the effect we want to create here is as if the black lines were wet and dried while dripping. So, using still your finest brush, draw some fine vertical lines beneath the horizontal curved lines, getting longer and a bit bolder as you near the bottom middle part. You also want to go upward once in a while.

And voilà! A simple, though maybe long to some's  tastes, technique that can be done in batches. At this point you will need to consider what base you want to do. Now, don't go waddling in snow with Leibermuster or you shall suffer the same grim fate as the Germans of the Eastern Front. You want to fight in a woody place, like the bocage, a forest, a jungle, etc. Now is also the time where you can put those little details that make these miniatures pop on the table. Well, sort of pop, as this camo, even at that scale, does it's work on a table.

And here's a finished picture of a few squads I did at a rate of about a squad in 5-6 hours (I'm a slow painter as I crave for details, you could pour them much faster if you don't bother too much.) The Ludwig is obviously not Leibermuster, it's an ambush camo.

The 213 schwerjägerabteilung is on the move, searching for a good spot to prepare an ambush for the foolish Allied invaders. I did really put any effort in the editing of the picture I am afraid, but it'll do for now.

And two close-ups:

Lara is the most recent one of the heavy armors, and has the best paint job among them, in my opinion. Stefan and his two cronies from the Geister squad are my favorites. Guillaume gave me the very clever idea that since this is very late war camo, they might not have for everyone even though it is an elite division, thus most Infantry2 (and eventually Infantry1) will have mismatched pants, except heroes and squad leaders (Infantry1 leaders might even get the cheap pants).
Now I'm just wondering what to do with Sigrid, but for now that is all for me. I will try to post more often (no promises here!) even if it's just a showcase of my latest mini.

Dust Tactics Starter Review: The Allies

Welcome Soldier, some of you have volunteered and some of you didn't but all of you will eventually realize what 's at stakes after seeing our enemies.
Thankfully, we'll vanquish the vermin SSU trying to take a hold in California and Alaska while liberating Europe from the Axis tyranny as it is only a matter of time before they fall before the strength of the Allied Warmachine!

Now grab your boots and your rifle, because we're going to review your entrypoint into the meatgrinder that WWII has become: The Allied Taskforce.

DUST: Axis Zombies and Grenadier X (Rated B for ''Bloody'')

Happy new year dear readers!

Its been a long time since I posted any picture of a painted miniature...the reason being that I was dead busy first with school and then with Christmas-new year... I managed to get one day for myself out of the two weeks ''vacations''.

DUST: Nikolaï

I Think Nikolaï is a really nice miniature, not only that, but his power is quite decent and he allows you to field a political platoon.

Here 's my Nikolaï painted for my SSU Shock Guard and Naval Troops for my Elba Campaign. He'll also be submitted to Club Chaos November's 'Colore ton Monde' , reinforcing the Dust presence in this monthly painting challenge.

DUST: Armored Car AB-47

Made in Italy and used by Axis forces worldwide, the AB-47 is a vehicle that has proven its utility time and time again. Its smaller frame and speed makes it perfect for Elba's road.

DUST: KoenigLuther

Although totally unfit for Elba's small roads, the 203Pzabt. could not have their KoenigLuther reassigned, as such High Command allowed the resources for it to be brought on the island.

DUST: Bertolt

MPW II-X ''BERTOLT''

If there is a Walker that caused trouble to the Allies and SSU during their invasion of Elba in 1947, it was the MPW II-X Bertolt.

DUST: Wotan

The 203's Wotan is finally ready for battle, it was painted with a ''Ambush'' camo pattern, while it might me a little outdated in 1947, it will still be perfect for a walker that boast such firepower that it doesn't need to move.
Sorry for the poor lighting

Dust: Tactics of Invasion

A Battle report for my third game of Dust Tactics (and first one since the revised system).

''Shitty Russian weather!'' swore the Grenadier next to Emil, the 203 Panzerabteilung had only benefited from a too short respite away from the Eastern Front, the time necessary to reform squads, bring new weapons and repair old walkers before sending them all back into the fray.

This small detachment had split from the main 203's forces to investigate scout reports of a Russian submarine base in-between Estonia and Leningrad.
Despite Emil's platoon being ordered to attack if the reports were true, they had been travelling in a small train and as such had been unable to bring some of the 203's heavier support.

DUST: FP2P, ''203'' Sturmpionere

FP2P: From Plastic to Painted.

Today, I am going to show how I painted one of my Sturmpionere.
The inspiration will be from my favorite RTS of all time: Company of Heroes, more precisely the Panzer Elite.

A Panzer Elite's Tankbuster Grenadier.
